However, if your tub is dingy or stained, the thought of settling in for a long soak might seem less than appealing. But just because the surface of your bathtub leaves something to be desired, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to ditch the whole thing. There are companies that can reglaze your bathtub for you.
While this renovation option has many names – reglazing, refinishing, resurfacing, recoating – the process is pretty straightforward. First, the surface of the tub is sanded down. Next, the cracks and chips are filled in. After that, several coats of primer and paint are applied and then buffed to a lustrous finish. Such a project can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 and is a great option for those who want to preserve a bathtub that is original to their home, such as an antique claw-foot tub. Bathtub reglazing works best on older tubs, which are typically made of cast iron, steel, or fiberglass. While you can reglaze an acrylic tub, it’s not often done because replacement options are usually just as, if not more, affordable than reglazing.
However, bathtub reglazing is not without its drawbacks. First off, the chemicals used in this process are pretty dangerous, and often require you to leave your home for a night or two while the vapors dissipate. Secondly, reglazing is not permanent. After reglazing, the surface of your tub might look shiny and new for a while, but within ten years, it may require some touch-ups.
