How Can You Make Your House More Energy Efficient

Easy Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

Thankfully, you can make your home more energy efficient without much effort at all. Here are some of the simpler strategies you can try:

  • Adjust your thermostat – In the winter, drop your thermostat by 10 to 15 degrees while you’re not at home. This can save you 5 to 15 percent per year. Likewise, in the summer, raise your thermostat a few degrees while you’re away so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard.
  • Stop washing clothes in hot water – Up to 90 percent of the energy your washer uses is to heat the water, while 10 percent is used to run the machine. Use cold water when washing clothes and you can save a significant amount of energy.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs – Switching your old incandescent lightbulbs with halogen, compact fluorescent, or LED bulbs will help you save on your energy bill. Plus, these newer bulbs last years longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Unplug chargers – Collectively, cell phone and battery chargers that are plugged in but not in use can be responsible for up to 10 percent of your energy usage. Unplug those chargers when you’re not using them!
