Which Countertops Are Easiest to Maintain?
When remodeling your kitchen, you’ll want to choose countertops that are going to look great but also won’t require a ton of upkeep. Granite has long been the go-to countertop material, but because it is naturally porous, granite needs to be sealed every few years to avoid getting stained. While we still love granite, we realize that these days not everybody has the time and energy to worry about maintaining countertops—so we’ve compiled this list of kitchen countertops that are the easiest to maintain.
Laminate countertops are great because not only are they easy to maintain, but they are also very affordable. They are available in just about any color and pattern you can imagine, so finding countertops that match your kitchen should be no problem at all. Their solid, non-porous surface will not absorb oil, red wine, lemon juice, and other liquids that can sometimes stain natural stone countertops.
Recycled glass countertops are crafted from crushed glass embedded in clear resin. It’s the same type of resin that is used to create solid surface countertops so it’s non-porous and easy to keep clean with soap and water. What’s more, these countertops are very attractive and, as they are composed of mostly recycled materials, are great for those who prefer to buy sustainable, eco-smart products.
Solid surface countertops include materials such as Corian and Soapstone. These countertops are incredibly low-maintenance and are resistant to heat as well as staining. They’ll never need to be sealed and even if they do scratch a bit, you can easily sand out the scratches to restore a like-new finish.
As far as countertops go, stainless steel is about as low-maintenance as you can get and is also incredibly durable, which explains why they’re used in just about every restaurant in the industry. Stainless steel countertops never need to be sealed and will resist staining from food, wine, oil, and abrasive cleaners. They’re also heat resistant, making them ideal for those who cook and/or bake at home frequently. And, while it may not be for everybody, the restaurant-style aesthetic they can provide is a nice added bonus.
