What Are Gutter Guards?
Your gutter system does the crucial job of channeling rainwater away from your home, thus preventing damage to your roof, soffit and fascia, landscaping, and foundation. However, when your gutters become clogged with leaves, sticks, and other debris, they are unable to perform this vital function, putting you at risk for the aforementioned damage. A clogged gutter system can also retain rainwater, which, over time, can cause sections of your gutters to begin sagging, pulling away from your home, or falling off your home altogether. Thankfully, gutter guards can help you sidestep these headaches by preventing your gutters from clogging in the first place.
Different Types of Gutter Guards
Brush
Brush gutter guards look like giant pipe cleaners. They are relatively inexpensive and simple to install, but they are really only effective at keeping large pieces of debris such as branches, pinecones, and bigger leaves from entering your gutters. So, while they can help to prevent clogs, with brush gutter guards, you’ll probably still have to clean your gutters from time to time.
Foam
Foam gutter guards are also pretty inexpensive and just as easy to install as brush gutter guards. They will also prevent larger pieces of debris from clogging up your gutter and are better than brush guards at keeping out smaller debris. However, due to the porous nature of the foam, you’ll probably have to periodically remove the gutter guards to clean bits off bits of decaying debris.
Screen & Micro Mesh
These two often get lumped together because they basically are the same thing, just with different sized holes. Screen gutter guards are the most common type found on homes today, and many homeowners consider them to be the best option given the cost. Micromesh guards tend to be a bit more expensive than screen guards, but with smaller holes, they are better at keeping out small bits of debris.
